Good to know
- Break-even units are fixed costs divided by the selling price minus the variable cost per unit
- Units are rounded up to a whole unit, because part of a unit does not cover the costs. The exact figure is shown next to it
- Use amounts without VAT, and fixed costs for the same period you sell in
- The selling price must be higher than the variable cost per unit, otherwise there is no break-even point. Not tax advice
Questions
What is the break-even point?
The number of units at which revenue equals total costs. Below it you make a loss, above it a profit.
How do I calculate the break-even point?
Divide the fixed costs by the contribution margin per unit, which is the selling price minus the variable cost per unit. 10,000 divided by (50 minus 30) is 500 units.
What is the contribution margin?
What one unit adds towards fixed costs and profit: its selling price minus its variable cost.
