Depreciation calculator
Depreciation calculator with a table per year: straight-line or declining balance, with a residual value and a first year that starts part way through. Free and online. It follows the numbers you type, not the tax tables of any country.
How to calculate depreciation
- 1Enter the purchase cost, residual value and useful life
- 2Choose straight-line or declining balance
- 3Read the yearly amount and the table per year
- A yearly amount, a chart and a table you can save
What you get
- Worked out on your device. The numbers you type are processed on your device, not uploaded
- Two methods, one table.Straight-line or declining balance, with the book value at the end of every year
- Totals that add up.Every year is rounded to cents and the last year takes the rest, so the sum is exact
What you can do
- Calculate straight-line depreciation: the same amount every year down to the residual value
- Calculate declining balance depreciation with the yearly rate you type, as a share of the book value
- Let the declining method change to straight-line as soon as that writes off more, so it ends at the residual value
- Start in the middle of a year: enter the months of use in the first year, and the table adds the months left over at the end
- See the book value in a chart and save the table as a CSV file
Good to know
- Tax law sets its own useful lives, rates and methods, and they differ by country. The tool does not know them: it follows the numbers you type
- Every year is rounded to cents and taken off the book value, as a ledger does. With straight-line the last year takes what is left
- Without the change to straight-line, a declining balance does not reach the residual value. The table then shows the book value that remains
- The useful life is a whole number of years, from 1 to 100. Not tax advice
Questions
How is straight-line depreciation calculated?
Purchase cost minus residual value, divided by the useful life in years. 10,000 with a residual value of 1,000 over 5 years is 1,800 a year.
What is declining balance depreciation?
Each year a fixed percentage of the remaining book value is written off, so the amounts get smaller. At 40 %, 10,000 gives 4,000 in the first year and 2,400 in the second.
Can I depreciate from the month of purchase?
Yes. Enter the months of use in the first year. With 9 months the first year gets nine twelfths, and the last three months follow in an extra year.
Are my numbers sent to a server?
No. The numbers are processed on your device, not uploaded.
