Fraction calculator
Fraction calculator: add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions and see each step. Type whole numbers, fractions like 3/4, mixed numbers like 1 1/2 or decimals like 0.75. You get the answer simplified, as a mixed number and as a decimal, worked out exactly with no rounding on the way.
How to calculate with fractions
- 1Type the first number, for example 1 1/2
- 2Pick plus, minus, times or divided by
- 3Type the second number and read the answer, or click Show steps to see the working
- The answer as a fraction, a mixed number and a decimal
What you get
- Every step.Common denominator, numerators added, the flip for dividing, and the simplifying, each in plain words
- Exact answers.Whole numbers of any length, so 1/3 + 1/6 is 1/2 and never 0.4999
- Three ways to read it.A simplified fraction, a mixed number and a decimal with its repeating digits marked
What you can do
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions
- Calculate with mixed numbers such as 2 3/8 and negative numbers such as −1/2
- Simplify one fraction: leave the second number empty
- Turn a decimal like 0.375 into a fraction, here 3/8
- Copy the fraction, the mixed number or the decimal with one click
Good to know
- A minus in front of a mixed number counts for all of it: −1 1/2 is −3/2
- A decimal may use a point or a comma, so 0.75 and 0,75 both work
- Repeating decimals are shown with the repeating digits in brackets: 1/6 is 0.1(6)
- Dividing by zero is not possible, and the calculator says so
Questions
How do I type a mixed number?
Type the whole number, a space, then the fraction: 1 1/2. For a negative mixed number, put the minus in front: −1 1/2.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Type it as the first number and leave the second empty. The calculator divides top and bottom by the largest number that goes into both and shows that step.
Does it round?
No. It works with whole numbers of any size, so the fraction is exact. Only a very long repeating decimal is cut short after 60 digits, marked with …
Why does dividing turn the second fraction upside down?
Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its flip. 3/4 ÷ 3/8 becomes 3/4 × 8/3, which is 2.
