Monitor calibration
Three test charts to set your monitor's brightness, contrast and gamma by eye, with the monitor's own buttons. This is a visual check, not a calibration with a measuring device, and it can't change your screen's colours. Free, in your browser.
How to adjust your monitor with test charts
- 1Set the browser's zoom to 100% and sit where you usually sit
- 2Black level: set the brightness until the first squares just show
- 3White level: set the contrast until the last squares stay visible
- 4Gamma: step back and find the column whose middle blends in
- Brightness, contrast and gamma set by eye on your monitor
What this check is
- A visual check. You judge the charts by eye and change the settings with your monitor's own buttons
- Drawn in your browser. The charts are made by the page at your screen's own pixels, nothing is sent anywhere
- Starts right away.Open the page and start
What you can do
- Check the black level: 12 dark squares on black, from 2 to 36 on the 0 to 255 scale
- Check the white level: 12 light squares on white, from 220 to 254
- Read your screen's gamma from five columns for 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 and 2.6
- Open each chart on its own with "Full screen"
Good to know
- The page cannot change your screen's colours, brightness or colour profile. You do that on the monitor or in your system settings
- For an exact colour profile you need a measuring device (a colorimeter) and its software
- The gamma lines are one screen pixel wide. At a zoom other than 100% they blur and the reading is off
- Most screens should be at a gamma of 2.2
Questions
Can I calibrate my monitor without a device?
You can set brightness, contrast and gamma by eye with these charts, and that often helps a lot. A real calibration with an exact colour profile needs a measuring device.
How do I set the brightness right?
Look at the black level chart. You should just see the first squares against the black. If all of them stand out clearly, turn the brightness down; if several disappear, turn it up.
What gamma should my monitor have?
Most screens should be at 2.2. Step back or squint: the column whose middle square blends into the lines around it shows your screen's gamma.
Does this tool change my screen's settings?
No. It only shows the charts. You change the settings yourself with the monitor's buttons or in your system settings.
