Dead pixel test
A free dead pixel test: fill your screen with one colour at a time and spot dead, stuck or hot pixels. Eight plain colours, full screen, and you decide when the next one comes. It runs in your browser, so it works for a new monitor, a laptop or a phone.
How to run a dead pixel test
- 1Clean the screen so dust doesn't look like a pixel
- 2Click "Start full screen", or pick a colour to begin with
- 3Tap, click or press → for the next colour and look from close by
- 4Press Esc or the × to go back
- A clear view of any pixel that doesn't follow the colour
What stays on your device
- Drawn in your browser. The colours are made by the page itself, nothing is sent anywhere
- Starts right away.Open the page and start
- You set the pace. The colour only changes when you tap or press a key, unless you turn on the timer
What you can do
- Show black, white, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow over the whole screen
- Start with any of the eight colours by clicking its swatch
- Go back a colour by tapping or clicking the left quarter of the screen, or with ←
- Let the colour change by itself every 3 seconds. This is off at first and not offered when your device asks for reduced motion
- Leave with Esc, the × in the corner or the browser's own way out of full screen
Good to know
- A dead pixel stays black on every colour, a stuck one stays red, green or blue, a hot one stays white on black
- The test shows faulty pixels. It cannot fix them
- The × and the hint fade after 3 seconds so they don't cover pixels, and come back when you move or tap
- The whole screen switches between bright colours. Stop if you feel unwell
- After 10 minutes without input, full screen closes by itself
Questions
How do I test my monitor for dead pixels?
Clean the screen, start full screen and go through the colours one by one. Look closely at each: a pixel that stays the same while the rest changes is faulty.
What is the difference between a dead and a stuck pixel?
A dead pixel stays black whatever colour is shown. A stuck pixel stays red, green or blue. A hot pixel is the opposite of dead: it stays white, which you see best on black.
Can this tool fix a stuck pixel?
No. It only shows the colours so you can find the pixel. It does not repair anything.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap to go to the next colour and tap the left quarter to go back. Where the browser allows no real full screen, as on an iPhone, the colour covers the page instead.
