GPX simplify
Make a GPX, FIT or TCX track smaller by removing points that do not change its shape. You set the tolerance in metres. The route and its times stay. Handy when a device or a website refuses a file with too many points.
How to simplify a GPX file
- 1Drop your GPX, FIT or TCX file in, or click to choose it
- 2Set the tolerance in metres with the slider or the field
- 3Check the point count, then save
- The same route with fewer points.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your track is simplified by your browser, on your own device.
- You see the cost before you save. The page shows the points before and after, and the shape on the map.
- Kept points stay complete.A point that stays keeps its time, elevation, heart rate, cadence and power.
What you can do
- Set a tolerance from 0.5 to 200 metres, with a slider or by typing it. The default is 5 metres.
- Use the Douglas-Peucker method: a point is dropped only if leaving it out would move the line by less than your tolerance.
- See "12,000 → 900 points" style counts and the share kept, as you change the tolerance.
- Keep the first and last point of every recording segment.
- Save the lighter track as GPX, TCX or FIT.
Good to know
- A tolerance of 2 to 5 metres keeps the shape of a road or trail. From about 20 metres corners start to get cut.
- Because points are removed, the distance and the elevation gain of the new file can differ a little from the original.
- Points without a position cannot be placed on the line and are left out. The page tells you how many.
Questions
How do I reduce the number of points in a GPX file?
Drop the file on this page, raise the tolerance until the count is low enough and the shape still looks right, then save.
What tolerance should I pick?
5 metres is a safe start. Go up for a smaller file, down if the line starts to look angular.
Does simplifying remove my timestamps?
No. The points that stay keep their times, heart rate, elevation and other values.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The track is simplified in your browser and never sent to a server.
